Understanding Chronological vs. Photo-Aging
Chronological aging is a natural process influenced by genetic factors and biological changes over time. It involves reduced cell turnover, declining collagen and elastin, and disrupted fatty acid balance, leading to dryness, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, dullness, uneven tone, and pigmentation. Bones become fragile, and fat and muscle volume decrease, resulting in body shape and facial contour changes.
Photo-aging, on the other hand, is caused by external environmental factors, primarily UV/UVB radiation, blue light from screens, pollution, lifestyle choices, and even microplastics found in many skincare products. These microplastics can damage the skin barrier, cause irritation, and increase oxidative stress, further contributing to premature aging alongside deeper wrinkles, pigmentation issues, and uneven texture.
